Affirmative Action Coalition Newsletter - March 2024
Hello from the Affirmative Action Coalition at UNC-CH!
We hope you had a great break and feel ready for the rest of the semester. We’d like to share with you updates and an upcoming involvement opportunity with our organization. If you are viewing this newsletter through Outlook, be sure to allow “blocked content” at the top of this email to see the flyer below and any other images.
Upcoming Events:
Join us on Wednesday, March 27th at 5:00pm for our first tranparUNCy teach-in! This teach-in will cover critical information about who the powerful individuals running UNC-CH, other UNC system schools, and NC are and what they don’t want students like us to know. We invite you to come discuss how attacks on these universities have impacted your education and strategize with us on how we can take back control. This event will be held in Student Union GSU-3205 and CLE credit will be offered!
Current Work:
In our newest episode of transparUNCy, Toby breaks down massive conservative donor Art Pope’s response to the previously published op-ed and transparUNCy episode investigating his direct, financial connection to allegedly nonpartisan Chancellor Lee Roberts. Check out the episode below to see our dissection of his arguments.
Make sure to follow our organization’s Instagram as well as the recently launched transparUNCy account!
Recent Events:
On February 22nd, members of our team traveled to Raleigh to hold a press conference with the NC Justice Center following the oral arguments of NC Supreme Court case Leandro v. State of NC. This case underscores the idea that inequitable and insufficient school funding prevents students from receiving a sound, basic public education. Leandro stresses the disproportionate impact faced by BIPOC students and those from low-income families.
To learn more about our Lights on Leandro campaign and the history of the ongoing case, visit our Instagram and the post below.
Thank you for taking a moment to catch up with our organization. We will reach out in the coming month with more updates and hope to see you at the teach-in!
With love and solidarity, the Aff Axn Coalition team
