Hello and happy Friday!
If this is your first time receiving a newsletter from us, welcome and thank you for taking the time to attend the teach-in last night! We are so grateful to see students consistently showing up and engaging with these past three teach-ins. Over the last few weeks we’ve seen how eager our student body is to fight back against UNC administration’s actions and it has been deeply inspiring. Your decisions to show up, learn the information, and channel it into action turns this organization’s efforts into a movement.
Please read the whole letter for important updates regarding our next teach-in, our public forum on university governance, the slides from last night, and more. If you are viewing this newsletter through Outlook, be sure to allow “blocked content” at the top of this email to see the flyer below.
Important - Save the Dates!
Upcoming Teach-in on DEI Bans:
You guessed it, we’re running another teach-in next week. UNC’s Trustees are rushing to ban Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives on campus. Last month, Trustee Jim Blaine said, “It is my belief that the BoG and State Legislature will follow Florida’s path with respect to DEI.” Don’t let them operate in darkness. Spread the word and show up to Union 3408 at 5pm on Tuesday, April 16th.
Public Forum on University Governance:
At the Chancellor Search Committee’s undergraduate listening session earlier this month, only 2 of the 12 members came to hear students’ concerns. This was an obvious example of how they do not want to hear our voices. If they will not give our student body a platform, then we’ll build our own. On April 24th, 5:00pm at the Anne Queen Lounge in the Campus Y, we will be inviting the Chapel Hill Board of Trustees and the UNC Board of Governors to attend a forum where students will speak about how we want our university to be run.
Show up to make your voice heard and speak truth to power!
Resources for Past Teach-ins:
4/11 Teach-in:
If you weren’t able to attend the SCiLL teach-in last night, you can still learn the information. Here are the slides for reference. If you haven’t already you can also check out our last episode of TransparUNCy where Julian breaks down why UNC administration’s plans for SCiLL are a problem and how we as students can resist.
We heard from some of you last night that you wanted to know more about student responses at other universities where their administrations have executed very similar plans to SCiLL. Here is the article mentioned last night, written by students at the Daily Princetonian about their James Madison Program’s ties to right-wing philanthropic networks.
4/4 Teach-in:
Our first two teach-ins covered the same material providing an introduction into who controls our UNC educations and a few of the many decisions they’ve made that they don’t want us to know. Take a moment to read the blog post on our website recapping the teach-in on 4/4, written by Emma Culley.
Thank you again for investing in this movement and our organization. We hope to see you on Tuesday and April 24th!
With love and solidarity,
The TransparUNCy Team
